Protein contents of foods

Protein is in an important part of our daily diet beside carbohydrates and fats. Proteins are complex organic compounds which are made up of smaller compounds known as amino acids. Amino acids combine in different symmetries to form various proteins.

There are total of 20 amino acids found in nature. Among them, human body is able to form 10. The amino acids which a human body can produce are called unessential amino acids and the rest are called essential amino acids.

Proteins have a number of functions in our body. These are:

1) Structure

Our body structure consists of two main parts i.e. skeleton and muscles. The muscles of our body mostly consist of protein. Therefore people working to build their muscle mass, include foods which have high content of protein in them.

2) Hormones

Most of internal reactions taking place in our body are initiated by a signal sent by our nervous system. Sometimes this signal is in the form of electrical signal and in some cases this signal is transferred with the help of hormones. For example sending a message of decreased level of glucose in blood is done via sending a hormone. These hormones are protein in nature.

3) Enzymes

Any chemical process taking place in our body is mostly very slow. To make the reaction fast, enzymes are secreted by different glands. These enzymes act as catalysts and are protein in nature.

As protein have different functions in our body so one should include protein as an important part of his or her diet. In order to keep a balanced diet containing all the necessary proteins, we should know the protein-contents-of-foods. Protein contents of various foods are:
